Mamma Mia!

Mamma Mia! at Des Moines Civic Center

Some stories exist to remind you that joy is allowed. Mamma Mia! follows a young woman on a Greek island trying to discover her identity, surrounded by friendship, complicated love, and questions only she can answer. The musical tells its story through the songs of ABBA, transforming familiar melodies into moments of heartbreak, laughter, and emotional recognition. Sunday, May 9, 2027, at 1:00 PM, Des Moines Civic Center hosts a production built to lift spirits and deliver exactly the kind of theatrical escape a Sunday afternoon was made for.

ABBA's catalog carries decades of emotional weight. Songs about longing, independence, heartbreak, and resilience become the framework for a story that honors those feelings without pretending life is simple. Mamma Mia! takes music you already know and gives it fresh context, letting each song deepen the story instead of interrupting it. Live theater transforms recorded music into something communal, something you experience together rather than alone.

Bring someone who needs an afternoon that feels lighter than the week that came before it. Bring a friend who grew up loving ABBA or someone discovering the music for the first time through this story.
