The Nutcracker at Des Moines Civic Center

Some holiday traditions ask you to sit still and behave. The Nutcracker invites you to watch Clara's dream unfold with mischievous mice, waltzing flowers, a prince, and the Sugar Plum Fairy. Iowa Dance Theatre brings Tchaikovsky's ballet to the Des Moines Civic Center on Saturday, December 12, 2026, at 2:00 PM, continuing a tradition the company has presented at this venue since 1997. The choreography and direction come from Central Iowa dance professionals who understand how to make this story resonate year after year.

The Nutcracker endures because it balances wonder with craft. Tchaikovsky's score carries the narrative without a single word, and the dancing translates Clara’s journey into movement. A familiar story can be a useful introduction for someone attending ballet for the first time.

Bring the grandparents, the kids, the friend who secretly loves ballet but never admits it. Give yourself permission to spend an afternoon watching a story that has anchored December for generations.
