The Nutcracker at Des Moines Civic Center

Clara's journey begins with a mysterious gift on Christmas Eve and ends in a kingdom where flowers waltz and a Sugar Plum Fairy reigns. The Nutcracker has captivated audiences for generations because it transforms a familiar holiday into something extraordinary: mischievous mice battle toy soldiers, snowflakes dance, and a young girl discovers a world beyond her wildest imagination. Iowa Dance Theatre brings Tchaikovsky's beloved ballet to the Des Moines Civic Center on Saturday, December 12, 2026, at 7:00 PM, continuing a tradition the company has honored at this venue since 1997.

Tchaikovsky's score carries the kind of emotional weight that makes December feel magical. The familiar score gives you melodies to follow as the story moves into Clara’s imagined world. The choreography and direction crafted by Central Iowa dance professionals give this production a local heart, and a direct connection to the region.

Bring your children, your parents, or anyone who believes the holidays deserve a night that feels special. The Nutcracker offers a reason to dress up, gather together, and share an experience that belongs to everyone in the room.
