The Nutcracker

The Nutcracker at Des Moines Civic Center

December gets loud, crowded, and transactional fast. The Nutcracker at Des Moines Civic Center on Friday, December 11, 2026, at 7:00 PM gives you permission to step away from the shopping lists and make time for ballet. Iowa Dance Theatre has been presenting this Tchaikovsky ballet at this venue since 1997, which means you're joining a ritual that predates smartphones and social media stress. Clara, a prince, mischievous mice, waltzing flowers, and the Sugar Plum Fairy still hold up because the story understands wonder, adventure, and the magic of believing in something larger than your daily routine.

The music gives the dancers a framework for telling Clara’s story, with choreography and direction by Central Iowa dance professionals. The company’s long connection to this venue gives returning audiences a tradition to revisit, and newcomers a local production to discover.

Bring the kids who need a break from screens. Bring your partner who deserves one evening that isn't about logistics. Or come solo and let someone else create the holiday moment while you simply watch. Explore tickets for The Nutcracker at Des Moines Civic Center and choose an outing for yourself this December.
