Des Moines Holiday Events: Christmas Lights, Shows & Festive Fun
Des Moines holiday events offer two useful starting points for a festive evening: the Botanical Garden’s Dome for the Holidays and a December performance at the Civic Center. The 2026–27 light-display season runs on selected evenings, while Maybe Happy Ending and Waitress have confirmed December engagements. Choose your date first, then compare the entry or performance time before arranging the rest of your outing.

Dome for the Holidays runs on selected evenings November 14, 2026–January 3, 2027 with a separate timed ticket. Maybe Happy Ending plays December 1–6, 2026 and Waitress December 18–20 at the Civic Center. These are theatre outings during the holiday season; their dates do not make them Christmas-themed productions.

The Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden lights its indoor tropical conservatory and Gardeners Show House for Dome for the Holidays. Select evenings run November 14, 2026–January 3, 2027, with separately ticketed timed entry.
The event closes November 26, December 24–25 and January 1. Displays include moving and flashing elements, but no strobe lighting. Consult the official calendar for a specific evening and entry window.

Holiday Broadway Shows at the Civic Center
The Des Moines Civic Center at 221 Walnut Street downtown anchors the city's theatrical calendar with the 2026–27 Willis Broadway Series. Two confirmed productions overlap the holiday season:
Maybe Happy Ending runs December 1–6, 2026, followed by Waitress December 18–20. These touring engagements perform in the Civic Center's 2,762-seat main hall, which also serves as the home stage for the Des Moines Symphony.
Check the exact performance and current ticket options. Series packages and individual tickets have different terms, and a touring engagement does not identify its cast simply by using a familiar show title. The Broadway guide covers the wider 2026–27 schedule.
Free Museum Experiences Through Winter
Two major museums welcome visitors with free admission throughout the holiday season and beyond, offering climate-controlled indoor exploration when outdoor activities wind down.
The Des Moines Art Center at 4700 Grand Avenue in Greenwood Park presents permanent collections and changing exhibitions. Hours are Tuesday–Wednesday 10 AM–4 PM, Thursday–Friday 10 AM–7 PM, and Saturday–Sunday 10 AM–5 PM; the museum is closed Mondays and selected holidays. Note that while museum entry is free, not every class or workshop operates on a drop-in basis or without additional fees.
Downtown, the State Historical Museum of Iowa at 600 East Locust Street focuses on Iowa history exhibits. The museum opens Tuesday–Friday 9 AM–4:30 PM and Saturday 9 AM–3 PM. It does not maintain Sunday or Monday hours, and holiday exceptions may apply, so verify the schedule before your visit.
Accessibility and Parking for Holiday Outings
Des Moines Performing Arts venues offer wheelchair seating, assistive listening devices, and selected ASL-interpreted and audio-described performances. Because these services are date-specific, contact the accessibility team at 515-246-2300 or [email protected] well before your chosen show to confirm availability and arrange accommodations.
For a Civic Center performance, DMPA identifies the Third & Court garage’s skywalk connection and lists Fourth & Grand as another garage. Street meters operate Monday–Saturday, 9 AM–9 PM; check the posted terms. Use the venue guide to plan your arrival.
Making the Most of Your Holiday Visit
Give the evening one main reservation. If the light display is your priority, choose its timed entry before adding another stop. If a musical is the main event, arrange the rest of the evening around its actual curtain time.
For a daytime activity, compare the Art Center or Historical Museum’s opening hours with your reservation. Leave room for travel between addresses rather than assuming all three attractions share a downtown location.
The winter guide offers ideas beyond the holiday period. If the December dates do not work for your group, consider a January concert or museum visit instead of trying to squeeze several reservations into one evening.
