Des Moines Food Festivals: Where to Find Great Food & Live Entertainment

Des Moines food festivals and markets serve different kinds of outings. The World Food & Music Festival combines international food with performances, the Iowa State Fair puts dining inside a larger agricultural event, and the Downtown Farmers’ Market focuses on shopping. Choose by the experience you want, then compare admission, purchases and the confirmed dates.

The short answer

For a food-and-performance festival, start with the World Food & Music Festival at Western Gateway Park. For a Fair day with food and other activities, the 2027 Iowa State Fair runs August 12–22. The Historic Court District farmers’ market is a separate Saturday shopping experience, while food at the Arts Festival accompanies an art-and-music visit. Free event entry does not mean free meals.

World Food & Music Festival: Global Flavors Meet Live Performance

The World Food & Music Festival is a free three-day event produced by the Greater Des Moines Partnership. Its Western Gateway Park format combines food vendors, live music, cultural performances and cooking demonstrations.

Food and drinks are separate purchases. Choose a few options that interest your group, then make room for a performance or demonstration when the schedule is published. The 2027 dates were not announced in the reviewed official information; do not assume an annual September weekend.

Current policies prohibit outside beverages and glass, require valid 21+ ID for alcohol and instruct guests to walk bicycles through the site. Review the organizer’s policies for the edition you attend.

Iowa State Fair: Eleven Days of Iconic Fairground Eats

The Iowa State Fair runs August 12–22, 2027 at East 30th Street and East University Avenue. Food is one part of a broader agricultural and entertainment visit, rather than the only reason to go.

Review the 2027 food and daily-program information when available. Keep your admission budget separate from food purchases and any Grandstand ticket. If you want a concert too, arrange your eating and other activities around the performance’s actual start time.

Choose a few priorities instead of treating a previous year’s list of dishes as a guaranteed menu. Read current vendor information and ask about ingredients or dietary needs directly. A familiar food name does not settle those questions.

Downtown Farmers' Market: Weekly Produce and Artisan Food

The Downtown Farmers’ Market takes place in the Historic Court District. Its published 2026 season is May 2–October 31, with Saturday hours of 7 AM–noon and 8 AM–noon in October. The 2027 season needs separate confirmation.

Produce, eggs, meat, cheese, baked goods, packaged foods and ready-to-eat food make it useful for both groceries and a meal. It is a market, not a substitute for a festival performance schedule. Plan how to carry purchases and get anything perishable home.

Des Moines Arts Festival: Food as Creative Complement

The Des Moines Arts Festival offers free general admission and live music, with food and drink purchases separate. Choose it primarily for the art-and-music experience, with eating as another part of the visit.

Review its edition-specific food information rather than expecting a particular vendor or menu. If your group wants to browse art and hear a performance, leave time for those activities before deciding where a meal fits.

Planning Your Food Festival Visit

Start with three questions: do you want a prepared meal, ingredients to take home or food alongside a performance? That separates the international festival, farmers’ market and broader Fair or arts outing more clearly than a list of dish names.

Agree on a spending plan and check payment information before ordering. For a group with different dietary needs, identify questions to ask each vendor. Treat free admission as the entry arrangement, not a promise about the cost of the day.

Put confirmed dates into your calendar and leave unannounced events flexible. If a performance anchors your visit, check its start time before choosing when to eat. Use the organizer’s current map for the arrival and meeting points.

Connecting Food Events to Des Moines Dining

If a vendor interests you, ask where you can find its current offerings beyond the event. Avoid assuming every stall has a permanent restaurant or follows the same regional event calendar.

For a restaurant-and-beer outing, compare the brewery guide, which distinguishes kitchens from taprooms that welcome outside food. The summer festival overview is the better next step when the date and broader entertainment program matter most.
